Into The Great Wide Open Vlieland 2015

In 2015 and 2016 I have photographed the Dutch festival culture focusing on the landscape, with and without people, so during and after the festival, as much as possible from the same viewpoint.
At a festival I feel at home, my hippie mother took me to my first in 1970. Later on I participated as a music lover and very often I have photographed at music festivals. I have done this since 1992, in line with my nightlife photography since the late 80s.
That I had to do something with festivals as a photographic subject-matter, was clear to me. The Netherlands handles these days more than 700 festivals and turned into a festival country. The nightlife has gained a well-developed division.
I find it fascinating and impressive how people come together with hundreds or thousands to experience music and to party. They have left the nightclubs for partying outside during daytime.

In my photography I had always addressed people, now I let the environment play a major role. Photographing the festival landscapes is a way to show the human lure of the culturally determined unity with nature. I also photographed portraits of the visitors.

And I simply wanted to know what the surroundings would look like without the people, the tents, the music and all the activity of the festivals.
The landscape without endeavours to be a Festival of the Elements on its own with upcoming sun, the mist and rain as its effects. The visitors are three bunnies, dogwalkers and some nudist.

There is a tradition in paintings of the Golden Age of (festival) landscapes. Initially the creation of God was depicted. Afterwards the landscape is a subject in itself and man is getting a different and bigger role, also by the position therein.
Festivalland is the winner of the 3rd prize of the Canon Zilveren Camera Award 2016,
in the Category Art, Culture and Entertainment, series

The photo book Festivalland is presented in Melkweg Expo
on the 20th of October during Amsterdam Dance Event.

Over Festivalland
Ik heb met het veranderende landschap als uitgangspunt de festivalcultuur vastgelegd, met en zonder mensen, dus tijdens en na het festival, zoveel mogelijk vanaf hetzelfde standpunt.

Op een festival voel ik me thuis, als kind van een hippiemoeder kwam ik in 1970 al bij VPRO Piknik. Later kwam ik er als muziekliefhebber en vaak heb ik gefotografeerd op festivals, Dat doe ik sinds 1992, in het verlengde van mijn fotografie van het uitgaansleven.

Ik móest vorig jaar iets met festivals doen, met jaarlijks meer dan 700 festivals is Nederland in een festivalland veranderd. Het uitgaansleven heeft er een goed ontwikkelde divisie bijgekregen.
Ik vind het fascinerend en indrukwekkend hoe men met honderden of duizenden samenkomt om muziek te beleven en feest te vieren, mensen hebben de clubs verruild voor het uitgaan buiten.

Ik richtte me altijd op de mensen, nu heb ik een slag naar buiten gemaakt, mijn blikveld verruimd en de omgeving een grote rol laten spelen. In mijn werk is het fotograferen van landschappen een manier om de hang van de cultureel bepaalde mens naar eenwording met de natuur te laten zien. Ik leg de mens daarin ook als individu vast in portretten.
Ik heb voor Festivalland 20 festivals gefotografeerd, en in de maanden daarna heb ik de lege landschappen opnieuw bezocht.

Het licht, de lucht, de omgeving, de mensen, de activiteit, samen met de juiste compositie daarvan zijn dat de doorslaggevende aspecten van een goede foto.
Het landschap na het festival doet zelf zijn best als Festival der Elementen met de op- en ondergaande zon, mist en regen als effecten. De bezoekers zijn dan drie konijnen, hondenuitlaters en een naaktloper.

Er is in de schilderkunst van de Gouden Eeuw een traditie van (feest) landschappen. In deze schilderijen werd in eerste instantie de schepping van God weergegeven, naderhand wordt het landschap een onderwerp op zich.
De mens krijgt steeds een andere en grotere rol, ook door de positionering daarin.
